About us
Mission Medical School and Hospital at Manipay Sri Lanka was founded in 1847 by Dr Samuel Green an American missionary doctor.
In a state of disrepair in 2004 (following 35 years of civil war in the province) the hospital has been revived with charitable help from Friends of Manipay Hospital UK . The American Ceylon Mission Trust owns the hospital and it is run as a 'not for profit hospital'.
American Mission Medical School was the second oldest medical school in South Asia and preceded the first medical school run by the Government of Ceylon in Colombo by 25 years. It functioned as a medical school for about 25 years from 1847, it then continued as a premier hospital in the Northern Province as a 'not for profit hospital'. It is run by a governing council and the names of all the governors www.greenmemorialhospital.com are given on this website. The Trustees of Friends of Manipay Hospital are;
Professor Jayantha Arnold, (Chief Trustee), Dr George Mather (Secretary), Dr Deva Vishwa and Mr Anandan Arnold.
Our charity was formed in 2005. We have contibuted around 500,000 GBP since inception to redevelop the hospital. We provide a free service to children affected by autism. We means test other users of the hospital and those who cannot afford care are given free care and those who can make a contibution towards their own medical care costs.
